WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EATING SEASONALLY?
We are lucky enough in the UK to have access to most foods all year round however focusing on eating with the seasons can have numerous nutritional benefits:
Produce picked in season when fully ripened has more flavour, tastes fresher and has a higher vitamin and mineral content.
Seasonal produce tends to be cheaper and supports local producers. There is less travel, processing and packing too.
It provides natural variety in our diets and encourages experimentation with a diverse range of foods you may not have considered cooking with. Our gut bugs LOVE variety too!
Phytonutrient content reduces with time meaning seasonal foods are usually more nutrient dense as there is less time between picking and eating.
Autumnal fruit and veg include: butternut squash, beetroot, chard, kale, cavolo nero, swede, celeriac, pumpkin, red cabbage, parsnips, wild mushrooms, leeks, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, Jerusalem artichokes, apples, pears, quince, sloes etc..
