IN CONVERSATION WITH: LYDIA GOLDTHORPE
Many of my clients work with therapists alongside the work we do together to achieve their desired outcomes. It can be a challenging process, finding the right practitioner for you in any field and I always get asked for good recommendations.
I am delighted to share an interview with Lydia Goldthorpe, a fantastic psychotherapist based in Edinburgh who works both online and in person. We met at an Edinburgh Wellness Networking event and clicked right away. She is a wonderful practitioner and has the most beautiful clinic room in central Edinburgh. I highly recommend getting in touch if you’re looking for support in this area.
Here are the Thirteen Questions I asked her when we met up earlier this month…
What made you want to be a psychotherapist?
The empathy I developed through my mother’s experience of breast cancer.
What did you want to be when you were younger?
A ballerina.
What do you love most about the work you do?
This is a tough question to answer. There is so much that I love. Probably the thing I love most is that it is about listening.
What is the best thing about running your own practice?
Agency.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.
How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Growing, dreaming, changing…
What do you love most about living and working in Edinburgh? Any hidden gems you've come across?
The light. I have just finished renovating my practice room looking over Holyrood Park. I spend a lot of time between practicing watching the delicate light change throughout the day. I love how it softly colours the sandstone terraces and catches different angles of Arthurs Seat. The winter light (though scarce) is the most beautiful.
What makes you feel most alive?
Swimming in the ocean. Singing and playing the piano. Time with loved ones.
What are your health non-negotiables?
Fresh air. Laughter. Cold showers. Dry skin brushing. Exercise. Physical affection.
What is your favourite way to relax?
A chat in the sauna with my fiancé. A stroll at dusk.
Do you have any great books or podcasts you find yourself recommending over and over again?
Anything by the Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke and Esther Perel podcasts
What do you wish everyone knew about psychotherapy?
Come to it with courage, patience, discipline and compassion. It will assist.
What are you grateful for?
That life led me to Scotland.
